Do VelaShape Treatments Hurt?
VelaShape patients report varying levels of discomfort during the actual treatment process. VelaShape uses suction to draw fat cells closer to the surface of the skin, two types of heat to break down fat cells and a mechanical roller to smooth the skin and promote a uniform absorbtion of fat cells into the body.
Specifically, the VelaShape device works by simultaneously applying two different heat sources in combination with a suction device and a rolling massager. The first heat source used is light energy which relaxes the top layers of your skin. The second heat source is known as RF (radiofrequency) heat, and is designed to penetrate, loosen and break down deeper layers of skin and the fat pockets contained therein. A suction device on the end of the VelaShape wand draws the fat pockets closer to the surface of the skin where a rolling massager further breaks down the loosened fat cells.
Dr. Ramie A. Tritt, Medical Director of the Tritt Aesthetic & Plastic Center in Atlanta notes that the VelaShape equipment represents a significant upgrade from the original equipment produced by Synecon, VelaShape's manufacturer. "The original Synecon device was called 'VelaSmooth' and while it was effective at reducing cellulite, many patients reported pain and sometimes bruising," explains Dr. Tritt. Dr. Tritt does note that VelaShape is a medical device and that a patient's experience can be impacted by both the technology of the equipment and the training of the technician adminstering the treatment. "In our office, both the medical doctors as well as the nurses and clinicians undergo rigorous, extensive and on-going training in the proper use of all medical equipment that is used on patients," notes Dr. Tritt.
