What is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable serum derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum.  This bacterium produces several neurotoxins, among which is botulinum toxin A, and Botox is a trade name owned by the pharmaceutical company Allergan for botulinum toxin A.  Botox® works by blocking muscle contractions. When injected into localized muscle groups that cause wrinkles, those muscles stop contracting and your wrinkles disappear.  The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Botox® to treat a variety of conditions.  FDA approval means that the Botox® serum used for wrinkle reduction and other conditions has been tested extensively for safety and effectiveness.

Botox® is commonly used to eliminate the wrinkles near the eyes (so called "frown lines"), forehead creases and "crows feet" near the mouth.  In addition, Botox® has been approved to treat cross-eyes, uncontrolled blinking, and severe mucle contractions in the neck.  At the Tritt Aesthetic & Plastic Center, our experience has been that Botox® treatments are extremely effective in eliminating wrinkles.  Botox® is available by prescription only and the injection procedures must be performed under the direction of a licensed medical professional.  In addition, we purchase Botox® directly from the manufacturer, thereby assuring you of purity and safety.

"Botox® treatments generally last at least three months," comments Dr. Ramie A. Tritt, Medical Director of the Tritt Aesthetic & Plastic Center.  "Adverse reactions from Botox® are extremely rare and our patients have been extremely happy with the very noticeable results following their injections.  Botox® literally makes skin wrinkles disappear and you will notice dramatic results within one or two days following the treatment."
